Where did this idea come from?
It's no question I'm slightly obsessed with The Great British Bake Off and I am also looking to advance my baking skills without enrolling in culinary school. Read my About and A Little Introduction pages to read more details about myself and the ideas that spawned The Great Bham Bake Project.
What are you most looking forward to baking?
Definitely the Technical Challenge Prinsesstarta from Season 1, Episode 6. The first time I watched this episode, I was dying to taste and make this cake, but who has the time to put together something so intricate and complicated? Now I have an excuse and I cannot wait to make this!
i do not have the tools or INGREDIENTS to create many of these bakes myself. where can i find them?
I started this project off with bare bones and basic baking supplies and was limited to the ingredients at the grocery store around the corner. I will work to try to keep this in mind when writing each of my posts by suggesting substitute pans/tools or ingredients and posting links to purchase any items that might not be typically stocked in an American kitchen. You can also check out the Tools page with all my tool and ingredient suggestions. If I missed something or if you have a question or suggestion, feel free to contact me or comment on my posts.
where do find the time for your bakes?
I work full-time and have a husband and baby to take care of so it would seem that I would not have the time to spend several hours in the kitchen. I bake on the weekends and am fortunate to have a husband who is willing to single-handedly take care of the baby during the times I spend in the kitchen. I also try to write my blog posts during the week during my lunch breaks at work. The Great Bham Bake Project is my passion project so if it means waking up early or staying up late, I am more than willing to put the time in.
Why the name?
I obviously chose the name The Great Bham Bake Project as a play on The Great British Bake Off but it was a little more than that. My city, Birmingham, Alabama has experienced a resurgence in city pride and revitalization that has not been seen my whole life. I love my city and wanted to pay homage by making sure I included Bham in the name.
what do you do when you're not baking?
I enjoy spending time with my husband and little boy, watching new shows on Netflix, taking walks around my neighborhood, and partaking in the ever expanding restaurant scene in Birmingham. Oh, and wine. I love a glass of wine after a long day at work. Pinot Noir is my favorite in case you were wondering. It goes brilliantly with my all time favorite food, macaroni and cheese. My favorite place to enjoy my 2 favorite things: soaking in a hot bath. You've never taken your macaroni with you in the bathtub? You should. You're welcome.
